A Letter to the Board of Directors,
Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod

Dear Board Members:

Having reviewed the minutes of your August 2002 meeting, I take serious exception to your assertions and actions.

You repeatedly assert oversight responsibilities over the Board for  Communication Services and others. Your responsibility is limited to the business and legal affairs of Synod. These are the only rights and duties expressly conferred upon you by Synod (Article XI A 1). The CCM opinion 02-2259 makes clear that you have no authority to issue a gag order to the President or the Board for Communication Services. You continue to violate Article XI B 1,2,3,&4 in attempting to limit the President in his assigned functions. Your claim to have "general oversight responsibilities for the behavior of Synod's members toward one another" was categorically refuted by CCM opinion 02-2257.

You propose to carry on your usurpation of authority at our synodical expense. The huge sum of $300,000.00 was given as a possible cost. What do you intend to do with that money? You speak of providing funds from the surplus in the budget. What is this surplus? Essential work of Synod has been cut by millions, and there is a large debt. You propose to take funds from the President and the Board for Communication Services to pay for your vendetta. Such punitive action will be seen for the gross abuse of power and attempt to control which marks your actions. If you make "dollars talk" in this way, members of Synod are sure to make their dollars talk by wihtholding them to an even greater extent.

Please reconsider your unwise course.

Siincerely,
George A. Loose
