Pardon the Interruption AGAIN!!!
MINISTRY UPDATES FROM ST. PETER'S – June, 2004

We have been out of touch for some additional time on the SPIRIT page at St. Peter's. The wonders of high technology just took a few extra months to reach zip code 11208.  Angie Arthur on the newly installed DSL Line will now be directly involved in placing items and photos for all our readers to enjoy.

St. Peter's has had a great Spring!  Here are some bulleted highlights:

  • School programs and renovations for summer and next fall include:
      • "old building" wall and floor repairs
      • exterior Hale Avenue entrance major renovation
      • new contract with the State of New York including the possibility of becoming a prestigious "early learning first" site
      • Nursery, Kindergarten, First and Second Grade programs at St. Peter's
      • Third grade and up programs at Our Savior Lutheran
      • New staff (to be introduced at a later date)

  • St. Peter's Praise Dance Team under the direction of Pocahontas Harris and with the talented assistance of adults Annette Evanson and Sybil Ocasio as well as teen assistant Samantha Jarquin has brought liturgical dance to our sanctuary throughout the Holy Season.  An extra highlight was the appearance of the group at Risen Christ in Brooklyn on May 23. Adults are also beginning to dance with the young girls.

  • St. Peter's Sunday School continues as source of joy and strength for church and community families, reaching over 25 children weekly, with ten in Confirmation class during the week.  The older children will be journeying to "Love out Loud" at Concordia College in June.
  • Cub Pack 251, founded during December, 2003, and led by Rodger Colon, is now enjoying enrollment of 17 boys, and has graced the sanctuary with service projects, even as Rodger Colon finalized his membership at St. Peter's on Palm Sunday.
  • OUR NEW DAUGHTER CONGREGATION, BETHANY in Queens Village, invited us sto celebrate their anniversary on the last Sunday in April.  What a joy that day was.  A 106 year old "mom" enjoying the energy and vitality of the new daughter, with worshipers on Sundays approaching 40 in number. Thankfully for all, the cuisine at Bethany is very much like the Caribbean fare at St. Peter's - plenty of roti, curry, dal, rice and peas and various curry specialties for all. God has truly blessed our elder, Jimmy Lalljie, in his capacity as missionary to the Caribbean community in Queens Village!

  • National Nehemiah Plan Celebration gave tremendous thanks to God for the work of local Lutherans in extending the hand of God's grace and mercy to thousands through Nehemiah housing. Rev. Matthew Harrison, head of the Synod's Human Care division, was with us on the "tour," which was led by former St. Peter's interim pastor Carlos Hernandez and his wife Maureen, two lifetime friends of our church.

  • Sonia Holder, Urmatie Singh, and Providencia de Jesus Colon completed their first year of course work in the Atlantic District Deacon program, and are truly enjoying this great opportunity for growth in the Kingdom.
  • Congratulations to these students who completed classes and have received their First Holy Communion at St. Peter's:
  • Josue Estrella, Gregory Grant, Xhana Lopez, Julio Maldonado, Amanda Rivera, Juana Vellon, Kimberly Vellon. May the Lord bless their reception of His Holy Meal for the rest of their lives!

  • WELCOME to three wonderful Christian women who made their profession of faith at the altar of St. Peter's at the Vigil of Easter, 2004:  Anna Fung, Madeline Fung, and Lillian Taylor. They have truly been blessed to be a blessing!
