Giuliani Five Times Square October 18, 2002 Ms. Sonia Holder, President Dear Ms. Holder: I have followed the aftermath of Pastor Dave Benke's participation in the Prayer for America at Yankee Stadium on September 23, 2001. Pastor Benke joined the service at my invitation as Mayor of New York City and his presence contributed to a truly inspiring event. I am dismayed by the reports of Pastor Benke's suspension. If there is any way I can be of help to him or the church, please do not hesitate to call on me. I have witnessed the love and healing that Pastor Benke's leadership has brought to our city throughout the years. Owing to the efforts of people like Dave Benke, I was aided in helping our city rise above its darkest hour, at a time when religious intolerance threatened to escalate into violence. As we remember our country's worst attacks, it is my fervent prayer that all religious leaders, including those of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, will rise above intolerance and work to resolve legitimate differences by honest and respectful communication and dialogue.
