St. Peter's Lutheran Church and School
- Lutheran
We are believers that we are saved by Grace
Alone, Faith Alone, and by Scripture revealing the Triune God Alone. We believe that the Means of Grace in the Word of God taught, proclaimed and heard, and in the Sacraments of Holy Baptism and the Lord's
Supper are God's ways to reach out to us with Divine love and mercy.
In Brooklyn Our congregational fathers decided some
thirty five years ago NOT to head for the suburbs, but to build anew in Cypress Hills. Our church buildings are planted deep through the middle of a city block in the heart of the Cypress
Hills neighborhood in the East New York section of Brooklyn. We are one block from the Norwood Avenue stop on the "J" train. We are between the major thoroughfares, Jamaica Avenue and Atlantic
Avenue. We are close to the Jackie Robinson Parkway. Our neighbors to the north are very quiet, because our community's northern border is made up of
cemeteries. We are at the eastern edge of Brooklyn near the Queens County border (City Line), and are proud participants in East Brooklyn Congregations.
- Worshipful
St. Peter's loves to go to church! Out of 125 baptized members, the Sunday
attendance often goes over 100. Plenty of guests and friends come in as well. We use the Lutheran worship resources called Lutheran Worship and
This Far By Faith for our English service, while utilizing Cantad al Senor and Culto Cristiano for our Spanish language worship. We love to sing the songs
of faith! Worship for the people of St. Peter's includes the celebration of Holy Communion on Sundays at all services every week. We believe that our "altar call" is one where we receive
God's mercy and grace in the Sacrament of the Altar. Baptisms are almost always held during Sunday worship – our understanding is that it takes a church to raise a child of God!
- Diverse
Our members and guests come from many walks of life, many countries of
origin, and many faith backgrounds. We also represent various racial and economic backgrounds. We are a sort of United Nations, especially if the UN were headquartered, as it should be, on some Caribbean island!
- Educators
St. Peter's Lutheran School, now headed toward its 28th year, is an example
of our commitment to the community by reaching out with the love of Jesus. In the past five years, the school has expanded from 55 to 150 students by
expanding kindergarten, adding first and second grades, and contracting with the City of New York to offer Universal Pre-Kindergarten classes. St. Peter's
school has a very high academic achievement standard, and the mean test scores in the last two years for kindergarten and grade school have been 1 ½ grades above level.
- Prayerful
We have strong prayer and Bible study ministries, and focus on moving the
love of God's people out into the homes of community members through prayer, house blessings, "cottage meetings," memorial services, and other such events
- Fun-loving
St. Peter's believes that the army of the Lord travels on its stomach! We
gather, host, and participate in as many opportunities for fellowship as we can – picnics, Sunday after-service monthly birthday parties, barbeques – any
excuse will do to pull us together to enjoy our Christian lives together.
